Context and brief

In 2023 Cala Health Inc., a medical technology company based in California, launched Cala kIQ, the only FDA-cleared, wearable device that delivers effective, on-demand, therapy for action hand tremor in people with essential tremor and Parkinson’s disease.

Cala kIQ-Cala Health's original Cala Trio device  launched in 2019 - transforms the way patients can manage symptoms

Cala Health approached Gosling to develop assets to help inform patients and healthcare providers on how to use the device and build a sense of community. This was to include user guide and an online patient portal.

Audience

The primary audience comprises Cala’s existing patient community and potential users of the Cala kIQ device. As a secondary audience, the creative and project was also to engage healthcare providers and clinicians specialising in the field of essential tremor and Parkinson's disease.

Challenge

Cala Health needed to improve its existing customer experience, whilst considering its diverse patient makeup. The brand is new, so it was important to work with its already (recently) established brand. The online portal had to be easy to navigate and accessible for patients, while still being interactive.

Our approach

In collaboration with the client and its technical development team, we designed the portal with patients in mind. We took time to understand Cala’s patient community, the challenges of their tremor disease, and how the Cala kIQ™ device helps them.

Throughout the portal, as well as within the supporting animations and informational assets, we created characters and iconography to allow for diversity of patient representation. This helped patients to identify and interact more closely with the site.

The development of bespoke characters and icons would then work in joining up the patient experience at every stage of their information and support journey.
